Google's Gemini AI, set to Rival OpenAI's GPT-4, Faces Delay Over Language Support Issues

  • Google delays Gemini AI launch to January 2024 over non-English query handling issues.
  • The AI model is poised to rival OpenAI's GPT-4 with advanced multimodal capabilities and global language support.
  • Google takes a cautious approach, focusing on refining Gemini's technology to ensure robust and competitive performance.

December 4, 2023: Google has pushed back the launch of its much-awaited Google Gemini AI model to January 2024. Initially slated for release next week, the delay is a response to concerns over the model’s handling of non-English queries.

This development follows the excitement built up during Google’s annual I/O 2023 conference, where the tech giant, along with Alphabet co-founder Sergey Brin, introduced Gemini as a significant addition to their AI lineup.

The decision, spearheaded by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, aims to ensure that the AI model offers robust global language support, potentially outperforming OpenAI’s GPT-4 in this aspect.

Sources indicate that while Google Gemini has matched OpenAI’s standards in certain areas, the company is diligently working to resolve remaining issues before the final release.

Gemini is designed with multimodal capabilities, excelling in text and image comprehension and being efficient in tool and API integrations. This positions it as an attractive option for third-party developers. Google’s vision includes a lightweight version, “Gecko,” tailored for mobile applications.

Demis Hassabis, leader of the combined team from Google and DeepMind, expressed optimism about Gemini’s progress.

The AI model is expected to incorporate techniques like planning and problem-solving, going beyond the current capabilities of ChatGPT and other generative AI technologies.

The postponement reflects Google’s careful approach to launching generative AI products, especially after the mixed reception of their chatbot Bard.

The company aims to end 2023 on a high note with Gemini, signaling its ability to compete in the generative AI field. However, the focus remains on perfecting the product, especially in terms of language diversity and accuracy.

With its revised launch date, Google Gemini is set to bring groundbreaking advancements in AI, promising innovations in capabilities and future-oriented features.

The tech community eagerly anticipates how this model will shape the landscape of generative AI and its applications across various sectors.
